Study shows why exercise boosts brainpower

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Exercise boosts brainpower by building new brain cells in a brain region linked with memory and memory loss, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
Tests on mice showed they grew new brain cells in a brain region called the dentate gyrus, a part of the hippocampus that is known to be affected in the age-related memory decline that begins around age 30 for most humans.
The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging scans to help document the process in mice -- and then used MRIs to look at the brains of people before and after exercise.
They found the same patterns, which suggests that people also grow new brain cells when they exercise.
"No previous research has systematically examined the different regions of the hippocampus and identified which region is most affected by exercise," Dr. Scott Small, a neurologist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York who led the study, said in a statement.
Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers said they first tested mice.
Brain expert Fred Gage, of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, had shown that exercise can cause the development of new brain cells in the mouse equivalent of the dentate gyrus.
The teams worked together to find a way to measure this using MRI, by tracking cerebral blood volume.
"Once these findings were established in mice, we were interested in determining how exercise affects the hippocampal cerebral blood volume maps of humans," they wrote.
They of course could not dissect the brains of people to see if new neurons grew, but they could use MRI to have a peek.
They recruited 11 healthy adults and made them undergo a three-month aerobic exercise regimen.
They did MRIs of their brains before and after. They also measured the fitness of each volunteer by measuring oxygen volume before and after the training program.
Exercise generated blood flow to the dentate gyrus of the people, and the more fit a person got, the more blood flow the MRI detected, the researchers found.
"The remarkable similarities between the exercise-induced cerebral blood volume changes in the hippocampal formation of mice and humans suggest that the effect is mediated by similar mechanisms," they wrote.
"Our next step is to identify the exercise regimen that is most beneficial to improve cognition and reduce normal memory loss, so that physicians may be able to prescribe specific types of exercise to improve memory," Small said.

THE TRUTH ABOUT EATING DISORDERS:
Tuesday night (May 8 ) HealthyPlace. com chat conference

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you dealing with anorexia or bulimia? Maybe you have a daughter or son,
sister or brother, wife or husband with an eating disorder? Or a friend or
co-worker?

You need to join us Tuesday night. We're going to get to the bottom of what
really causes an eating disorder (hint: it's not models in ads) and what it
takes to recover.

Our guest is Aimee Liu, author of the new book "Gaining: The Truth About
Eating Disorders." Aimee suffered from severe anorexia as a teen, thought
she had recovered, then faced a severe relapse in her 40s. Now she says "I'm
fully recovered."

She'll talk about her personal experiences and maybe, more importantly, what
she found out through interviewing the top eating disorders researchers and
treatment professionals in the world. What Aimee has to say could very well
help you or your loved one.

The chat starts at 9 pm Eastern, 8 pm Central, 7 pm Mountain, 6 pm Pacific
(-4 GMT). There is no charge to participate and our guest will be taking
your personal questions.

Our chat link is: http://chat. healthyplace. com

and if you don't have a username/password, just click the "register" link on
top of the page.

All of us at HealthyPlace. com wish you a pleasant weekend. Feel free to pass
this email onto others you think might benefit and we hope to see you at the
chat on Tuesday night.

Oh! And did I mention that we'll be giving away some free copies of Aimee
Liu's new book.

Thank you,
Deborah

Bulgarians Are champions in work stress

Sofia. Italians, Bulgarians and Greeks are most prone to work stress among EU citizens, according to a survey conducted by European Foundation and cited by the English-language online version of Standart daily. The Finns, Dutch and Danes, reportedly, are among those who feel best in their offices. Sixty-three percent of the polled Italians answer they are under stress at their working places. The Italians are followed closely by the Bulgarians - 62.8% and the Greeks - 62.7%. Then there are the Portuguese - 59.4%, the Slovaks - 55.1%, the Cypriots - 53.9%, the Poles - 53.5%, the Germans - 51.1, the Austrians - 43.6%, the Spanish - 43.6%, the British - 41.1%, the Czechs - 40% and the French - 38.4%.
According to the survey, over a fifth of the Europeans get home after work so tired that they could do nothing requiring physical efforts. More than a half of the Europeans believe they devote more energy to their work than to their spare time and family. Every seventh EU citizen thinks his or her job is very boring. Europeans are very much afraid of losing their job. The Germans, Poles and the French fear this thought the most.

Ivan Igov, school psychologist: Three categories of people become teachers

24 September 2007 | 14:18 | FOCUS News Agency

Sofia. Today three types of people become teachers – ones who cannot find a job, ones who are idealists, ones to whom profession is a hobby and live on the income of their spouse or from private business, school psychologist and teacher Ivan Igov told FOCUS News Agency in an interview. Many of the parents who are now protesting that children stay at home, perhaps don’t realize that the child at school that has been raised by a teacher cannot be taught to adequate social skills and life success. Every parent wants their child to go to school to make knowledge and be prepared for life, but when the knowledge is given by teachers who cannot manage their own lives, then what do children learn?, Igov commented.

Bulgarians experience cultural differences much harder than Europeans do: psychologist

Sofia. The issue of how critical we are to our own attitude and culture is extremely important. Speaking about how a person sees himself and about the culture as a phenomenon – how we see ourselves as a nation and how well this nation is successful are two different things, psychologist Vladimir Bostandzhiev told FOCUS News Agency in an interview. He believes that after Bulgaria’s EU accession Bulgarians experience the cultural differences from the Europeans much harder. ‘Unfortunately, our culture is very traditional, quite patriarchal as compared with the European one’, he says. Wednesday is the world day of psychic health.

The next General Meeting of the EAESP will take place in Opatija (Croatia)
from June 10-14, 2008.

Here are some words welcome from the chair of the organising committee, Dinka
Corkalo: Optaija is one of the top destinations on the beautiful Adriatic costline. The
region and city are renowned for their pleasant climate, crystal clear sea, excellent wines and
gastronomy. It is no wonder that the first tourists were the European nobility who, having discovered this
picturesque place, started building villas to enjoy the sun and the sea. Today, this Riviera can be
conveniently accessed from Rijeka Airport (20 minutes) that is served by several low-budget carriers.
Also, Opatija can be reached in less than two hours by road from airports in Zagreb (Croatia), Ljubljana
(Slovenia) and Trieste (Italy). It is also within driving distance of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy,
and Hungary. The Hotel Ambassador and the Grand Hotel Four Flowers, which are only five minutes
walking distance apart, will serve as the conference venues. These, as well as most of the other hotels,
are located on the seafront, with private beaches and a short walk from the town's main attractions.

The scientific program is not the only reason to participate in the
conference. The social program will offer an insight into the local culture, visits to the nearby attractions and
evening entertainment. There will also be attractive pre- and post-conference tours to destinations such as
Venice (Italy), the unique Plitvice Lakes National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage location), the
monumental Postojna Caves (Slovenia) and the Istra peninsula. You could also visit one of the thousand
Adriatic islands for a relaxing week. The weather in June should be sunny, with daytime temperatures
of 20-23 degrees Celsius.

(travel, accommodation etc.) is available on the website:
