Prophylaxis of Stress Cases Caused by Specific Environment and
Character Factors during the Service in the Bulgarian Armed Forces
Some Physical Factors in the Prophylaxis of the Named Cases

By L.Taskova, Tr.Troev, and R.Roussev

To begin with we shall say that modern life has raised two new problems
before physical medicine, psychology, and rehabilitation. It has
intensified one of the already existing problems as well.
The first of these problems came into being with the formation of large
groups of military personnel who had been deployed for a long period of
time in war conditions and thus had experienced wartime stress.
The second problem is related to the current need for operational
readiness for the treatment of certain groups of civilians. These
groups could possibly come under the conditions of terrorist activities
or some other threat. So the treatment in these cases will be aimed at
restoring their mental condition.
The crisis characteristics of the continual economic, political, and
social processes in Bulgaria and its Armed Forces after the 1989
democratic changes led to the intensification of problems such as the
so called “professional loss of morale”.
World medicine and psychology have already taken under consideration
the above-mentioned problems. Consequently some experience has already
been accumulated.
The world experience in the treatment of such cases should be
transferred and adapted to the specific Bulgarian conditions. If we
combine it with the real natural physical factors of the environment
and the achievement of the Bulgarian Rehabilitation School this will
give us the opportunity to carry out a successful medical intervention
upon these problems and minimize them in an effective way.
The following article expresses in general the expert view of a medical
council from the Bulgarian Military-Medical Academy as well as the one
of the Association on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, chaired by
Associate Professor Troycho Troev. This expert view is related to the
treatment and rehabilitation of patients who had experienced combat or
other types of professional stress including real life threats. The
treatment incorporates comprehensive methods as well as physical
therapy.
